“Field of Courage” (Black Panthers in Formation)
In 1966, the Black Panther Party (BPP) was founded. It was a Black political organization; originally known as the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. The "Black Panther Party for Self Defense" was formed to protect Black individuals and neighborhoods from police brutality. The BPP originated in Oakland, California, by founders Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. In 1966, the Black Panther Party offered a list of their wants and beliefs. Drawing from the language of the Declaration of Independence, the document made a powerful statement about the state of race relations in the United States at the time.
